There is no denying that development is a complex organic process. It cannot be forced on to the people. It must grow from bottom up. Many of the people in Bangladesh are poor. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The poor and the most vulnerable groups belong to the lowest economic ladder

. Therefore, hunger, disease, malnutrition, illiteracy and ignorance and extreme poverty and food insecurity are common problems of their lives. UST in working with the poor, came to realize that there is not a single reason for being poor and poorer. There are some problems that deal with the people's perception, some problems that deal with the social system, some problems that deal with resource distribution system and some problems that deal with policy reformation and development. However, before any successful scheme can be inaugurated, there are necessary pre-requisites and policy pre-conditions which must be fulfilled. In order to help people to help themselves which are the essence of change and development, a process of training, education and organization is required. This has to be followed by integrated and holistic approach. Since inception, UST has implemented quite a good number of programmes aiming at socio-economic improvement of the people.
