Specialization of UST

UST has been working as one of the frontline development organizations at national level with a vision `` Peoples’ Development is in People’s Hands’’ for a long time. It was established in 1986. Since then, for the last 35 years, UST has been implementing its activities with utmost efficiency and confidence. It is a multidimensional development organization having experience as well as versatility in implementing routine programs including services, rights based, women empowerment, gender equality/equity as well as good governance projects. It also has also worked in field of advocacy, linkage and networking development. UST is member of many national and international organizations, Networks.

UST is guided by some core values. It always prefers people’s participation in its programs. UST takes the people with whom it works as the main driving force. Thus UST has set people-centered development approach. UST always plays roles of a facilitator and outsider while the people (beneficiaries) assess their problems, identify needs, do planning, implementation and monitoring of activities as an insider. To UST, the beneficiaries are the architect of their own development. Because, as UST believes, build their commitment and work for their own development. Over the past 35 years UST has worked in various geographical areas and environments of the country such as flat lands, flood plains, offshore, onshore as well as riverine chars and coastal areas. As of today it has worked in 27 districts, 74 Upazila and 332 unions of the country. A bout 67 projects have been implemented by UST in its 35 years of operation, addressing SDG-1, SDG-4, SDG-5, SDG-6, SDG-8, SDG-10 and SDG-16 and 17. About 1, 5,772,839 people have been benefitted by UST’s programs which includes men (69, 37,857), women (68, 83,000), Transgender (15000), Adolescent boys (9, 72, 382) adolescent girls ( 9, 64,600) and Children (24, 90,454).UST has worked under financing of numbers of international and national donors. Among those, WarerAid, Penny Appeal, SWALLOWS India Bangladesh, WFP, Ministry of Education, Practical Action, WSSCC, ICCO-Cooperation, GOB-UNICEF, Manusher Jonno Foundation, EU, HYSAWA Foundation, BRRI etc. are the significant.

UST’s activities are implemented mainly on four thematic areas, such as i) Climate change and Disaster Management, ii) Women empowerment & child rights, iii) Food Security and Livelihood, iv) Sustainable Environmental Health & sanitation. Gender, gender equality, equity etc. issues are intertwined with these themes as cross-cutting issues. UST conducted a survey in the community prior to launching the programs and realized that community’s problems are interrelated. Considering this assumption, UST primarily started its works through integrated programs. Over time, UST has gained experience and expertise. Thus the programs are split into four separate programs as follows:

1.UST’s Food Security & Livelihood project has been implemented in four districts i.e. Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Narayonganj and Barguna. More than 34, 58,964 people have received supports from this program.

Major approaches that UST has followed as of today are: women-led, UP-led, CLTS, Climate-resilient-WaSH and UDMC-led approaches. UST believes that water and sanitation is a part of human rights. Thus, despite awareness rising, capacity building of the community, UST ensures safely-managed water and sanitation by installing safe water facilities along with the hygienic latrines in the community, public place, schools. 3. Women's empowerment and child rights:

This is one of the UST's missions. According to UST, women's empowerment is a status where women will have a voice for their rights. UST observes that women are more neglected in society. They cannot raise their voice on any issue of the society. They are deprived of all socio-economic opportunities. They are unjustly exposed to various kinds of stigma. They are abused in the family and in society. UST understood in principle that the participation of women in the process is necessary to make the society or the country as a whole. That's why UST has put women at the center of the development process. By organizing all women through the formation of CBO, associations/ Federations, it has established them as the main driving force of development by increasing their knowledge and skills. GUP- Gram Unnayan Parishad is the best example of its women empowerment. To date, UST has implemented as many as six programs pertaining to women's rights including women farmers rights in various parts of the country, including Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Tangail districts in the north, and Barguna and Shariatpur districts in the south. Under this program, UST has worked on women's human rights, women's political rights, women farmers rights etc. UST has implemented separate projects in all cases in different geographical locations i.e. Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Tangail, Barguna and Shariatpur. UST by assessment has seen that putting economic resources in women’s hands is the best way to accelerate development and sustainably, and to reduce poverty. UST’s women empowerment program has built women’s knowledge, skills and capacity. Women, as a consequence, of their empowerment characteristically invest in their families and communities significantly. They are collecting wealth and increasing the quality of life for themselves and their families. UST’s work acquired gender equality and women’s sustainable development. UST has implemented a number of projects under this theme. As regards child rights, UST has addressed their educational as well as psychological sides. Besides it works with child health, child trafficking and child abuse. The prime aim of this program was to give quality education to the children of poor deprived communities and protection children from any sort of hazards. Over the years, UST has gained vast experience in disaster preparedness and risk management following the disaster which includes but not limited to only disaster management. To achieve that UST has provided indispensable information and training to the people to enhance their capacity to mobilize local resources and relief during emergency. UST has demonstrated experience of working with the victims of flash floods, cyclones, draught and tornados, Monga (temporary famine). UST believes that providing relief is not the ultimate solution and thus it works with the local people to promote their knowledge and skills to cope with disasters. The organization has capacity for fastest response (both hardware and software) mechanism while any emergency occurs. UST’s supports includes reconstructing and repairing damaged houses, reinstalling and repairing sanitation facilities, construction of low-cost latrines, ring-slab latrines, and community latrines, drinking water facilities, distribution of fishing materials including boats and nets to the fishermen, distribution of education materials i.e. books, pens, pencils, pages etc. Besides, UST has also provided skills development training to the affected people to participate income generating activities, homestead gardening, social forestation and provided with seeds and goats etc. UST’s experience of Climate justice program: UST has demonstrated experience of implementing climate justice program. UST is always of opinion ofInclusive, accountable and responsive governance systems, underpin the ability of Governments to identify, get-up-and-go, and direct national and local priorities, strategies and activities for sustaining peace in a responsive and inclusive approach to development and peace building. It has worked with like-minded organizations, stakeholders at government and non-governmental sectors and builds capacity of the Right holders. Primarily UST started this work with Local Government system. It has built governance LGI, it has made the LGI pro-poor and responsive to peoples' need. It has worked for preparation of peoples' need-based budget and declaration in the open forum. UST has also worked to increase capacity of LGI in mobilizing resources and allocation/ distribution to the right persons/ families.

6. Sustainability:

UST always thinks of sustainability as a priority area. It comes when preparing the project. UST believes that one day the beneficiaries will be graduated. They will be capable and skilled. They will be able work, take. And that is what UST expects, as indicated in its goal, mission, mission etc. UST assigns leadership to the person, specifically a Federation whom it has provided all sorts of capacity building trainings during project period. UST’s GUP s one that UST assigns to, which continues works voluntarily.
