33 Years of UST’s Success

Successful leadership is judged by uninterrupted achievements. Leadership is built and tended for onward invasion. UST has made myriad invasions in 33 years with significant results consistently. It has been working in the areas of Food security & Livelihood, Women empowerment and child rights, WaSH, Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness. Good governance, health, nutrition, Advocacy and networking are cross-cutting issues of its programs. UST in 33 years has given its services to more than 1.7 billion people. Deprived women, children are UST’s focused beneficiaries. UST has worked in diversified types of area i.e. char, plain land, flood plains, coastal as well as reverine char.

UST is guided by some core values. ``People’s development is in people’s hand’’ is our belief. UST always prefers people’s participation. It believes that targeted people are the main force in development.UST has set people-centered development approach. Thus UST involves people in doing problem assessment; need identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of activities. We as outsider facilitate the people. In the end the beneficiaries build their commitment and work for their own development. In last 33 years we have worked in 27 districts, 71 Upazila and 332 unions of the country. We have undertaken as many as 67 projects during this period. More than 1,38,35,857 are benefitted. Among them, 69,45,857 are men and 68,90,000 are women. About 9,72,382 are adolescent boys, 9, 64,600 adolescent girls and 24,90,454 children. Our major projects have addressed successfully the SDG-1, SDG-4, SDG-5, SDG-6, SDG-8, SDG-10 and SDG-16. As regards SDG-17, UST is member of many national and international organizations, Networks.

UST has worked under financing of numbers of international and national donors. WarerAid, Penny Appeal, SWALLOWS India Bangladesh, WFP, WSSCC, ICCO-Cooperation, GOB-UNICEF, Manusher Jonno Foundation, EU, HYSAWA Foundation etc. are the significant organization.

UST’s Food Security & Livelihood project has been implemented in four districts i.e. Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Narayonganj and Barguna. More than 34,58,964 people have received supports from this program. Capacity building training, life skill training, asset generation and re-generation, Homestead gardening, agriculture farming, forestation, plantation, fruit tree plantation are the major components of UST’s food Security project. At least 70% of the total beneficiaries have achieved food security. About 21057 women are given assets (Cow, goat, and poultry). About 20000 HHs beneficiaries belong to cow, goat and poultry. At least 200 families consume nutritious fruit and earn money by selling fruits. A total of 626,000 people have managed to improve food security through home gardening and agricultural activities.UST by assessment has shown that putting economic resources in women’s hands is the best way to accelerate development and sustainably reduce poverty. UST’s WE program has built capacity of women. Women as a consequence of their empowerment characteristically invest in their families and communities significantly, are collecting wealth and increasing the quality of life for themselves and their families. UST’s work acquired gender equality and women’s sustainable development. UST has implemented a number of projects under this theme with about 27,67,171 women as of the 2019.

As a result of the project, around 100,000 women manage their community’s development through self-help approach. They are raising their demands to Union Parishad for their development and helping ultra poor women to get enrolled under safety-net programs. Women are taking part in budget preparation process at Union Parishad. Already 12 (Twelve) women beneficiaries have been elected to Union Parishad as members contesting in direct poll. The women also are taking part in other electoral process like election campaign, candidate selection etc. GUP leaders are taking part in arbitration, local Salish, village courts. Our program has stopped early marriage at Kathali Union of Jaldhaka Upazila in Nilphamari district. Simultaneously dowry practice, divorce etc. in all of our working areas have been reduced. Nilphamari district have been reduced. A few women leaders have won Joyeeta Award for their outstanding contribution to society.

Education and training is significant part of UST’s integrated program. About 5250 children have received education through ECD program. About 49012 children have been graduated from our NFPE program. We opened a number of primary schools in the community. Two schools out of those have been transformed in to high schools. About 7255 student have already received education from those high schools. Similarly, our two high schools have been transformed in to colleges in two areas. About 300 students get admitted in those colleges every year. As many as 3150 students passed HSC from those schools as of today. Unnayan Shahojogy Team established 1055 Khelipori Schools for poor children’s education at their early age. More than 70,312 children received education from those schools. It is our great achievement that 45 khelipori schools were taken over by the government to mainstream with other primary education programs.

WaSH program is a big program of UST. About 14 districts, 33 Upazila and 208 Unions have been covered by our WaSH program. We have installed TWs, Hygienic latrines, climate resilient latrines, platforms and worked for hygiene promotion. About 141 Unions were declared ODF. About four million people are enjoying safe, hygienic water and sanitation facilities in different districts.WE have installed TW, DTW, and Hygienic latrine at Community, bazaar, and schools with menstrual hygiene facilities. We have given education on MHM, SRHR and provided ANC, PNC services to the women; training to TBAs and mothers on reproductive health and child feeding.

Our contribution towards climate change and disaster management is noteworthy. This program has helped about 13,83,585 people in last 33 years. We have undertaken relief and rehabilitation program and some more than 320,000 families as a result of UST’s intervention managed to re-establish their lives. UST under this program constructed Cyclone shelters at Kutubdia and Banshkhali.

UST has gained honor, supports and dignity. Above all it has gained identity of an organization in the development sector. UST belongs to Training centers in Dhaka, Nilphamari and Tangail.

UST seeks warm cooperation and supports from all its well wishers.
